However, I should clarify one of my responses to the survey: I don't think the use of preprints to communicate results is justified *because* of the pandemic. Instead, the use of preprints is justified at all times! Put differently, whether a paper has undergone peer-review should be immaterial to how journalists report a study, and peer-review itself has been shown up to be grossly inadequate during the pandemic. I persona lly feel that there aren't any easy or quick solutions to these problems, and the only way out is to inculcate and encourage critical attitudes over longer, sustained periods of time. This means we need to radically change the way we approach scicomm in the long term to ensure that we: 1. Engage in more democratic and multi-directional dialogues 2. Acknowledge & incorporate lived-in expertise better 3. Build trust In the short- and mid-term, one could perhaps focus on a combination of the following a pproaches:b( 1. Effective scicomm begins at home - start an open conversation with people you know well (family & friends) and who would be willing to consider contrarian views.b( 2. For people beyond your immediate close circle, try and establish some c ommon ground - shared experiences, interests, motivations, group membership - to begin a honest conversation where they are more willing to listen (and hopefully consider) your views. 3. Be as honest & open as possible. Instead of just sharing your opinio ns, try to listen; be polite & kind; share complete information w/o holding back; share sources & references (if they are willing to view them); lay out the reasoning & logic behind your views. 4. And most importantly, try to build upon your own trustwort hiness as much as possible. If people start doubting your motives, it can get very difficult to have a constructive conversation with them. Share your biases and other conflicts of interests transparently, if relevant. These are just a few thoughts I had off the top of my head (and had previously shared on Twitter). Male Self-employed / freelancer gffTwitter;Facebook;LinkedIn 20+ years India ghhghhhehheffgefffhgifigeI tried my best not to write anything on COVID-19 myself and discouraged the people that I train also to refrain, initially. The mess - fear, panic - that was caused by the media was too high to counter. However, on Facebook and Twitter, I did intervene w hen I saw science communicators shared reports that did not make sense. I found it stupid when there was a claim that the virus survives so many hours on such and such material without mentioning the experimental method. To say that the virus travels 3 f eet, 6 feet or 20 feet, without mentioning the protocol used to arrive at the results was idiotic. And such inanities were coming from established science communicators. Communicating the results of science without mentioning the methods used is the best way to make superstition acceptable in the name of science. I do understand and appreciate the difficulties in dealing with materials and methods section of scientific papers. It is usually written in a manner that even scientists in the same field cann ot understand or even interpret. Scientists who are not keen to repeat the experiments even the skip the section. But when reporting the results of science, if the methods used to arrive at the results are not even mentioned, it harms science. Those who d o not appreciate the uncertainties in scientific endeavour believe the results till another report contradicts it. And then they get confused and start disbelieving in science altogether. This problem caused by well-meaning people is more problematic tha n the issue of fake news. It supported the development of blame, denial, ostracization and victimisation that followed the negatively framed sensational media reports. Later, I had to write about COVID-19 in two or three issues of a fortnightly column tha t I write for a scientific journal. And as media attention on COVID declined, I started allowing my team also to report COVID-19 related stories. But the harm that is done by science communicators will take decades to overcome. We are in the same mess as we were in the initial days of HIV. For example, contradictory scientific results do not in themselves need to negatively impact the public understanding of SARS-CoV-2 or the pandemic. But if th ey are reported in a way that focuses on the disagreement and makes it sound like scientists are in 'camps' against each other (often the truth is much more nuanced!), then yes - this hurts the public's understanding. We could be using these times as a ch ance to better educate about the complexities of science, and highlight the many things that scientists do agree upon, rather than magnifying what is often a very specific disagreement. Similarly, preprints are needed in this time to communicate quickly - we would move much slower if all scientists had to wait for publication to announce their results. However, if reporting on these to the public, much care must be taken, as they clearly do not have the weight of peer review behind them. One thing I've se en far too many times is articles that only interview the authors of the study and maybe one other scientist - of course the authors are going to wholeheartedly agree with their work, or they wouldn't have done it. With any paper, it is really vital to ge t a range of opinions from the scientific community, but this is doubly-so for preprints, and journalists could go a long way by ensuring they've gotten multiple takes (not from scientists suggested by the authors) on the work before they report. So, we c an see these things as opportunities - but only if we handle them appropriately.Researchers University and Research Institution (incl. CovidGyan is a multi-institutional website that serves as a hub to bring together a collection of resources i n response to the COVID-19 outbreak. These resources are generated by public supported research institutions in India and associated programs. The content presented relies on the best available scientific understanding of the disease and its transmission. My contribution for the CovidGyan has been for creating FAQ based resources, designning infographics, writing articles (referring pre-prints as well), writing blurbs from a scientific study, engaging with public health specialist in a conversation, inte rviewing scientists for writing articles. We work as a team in these areas. Infact, now we are also venturing into community engagement with students and teachers for creating awareness by organizing competitions for school and college students. The gen eral feedback about the science communication is that it has been quite useful in public understanding of the scientific issues related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The entire effort of COVID-19 communication has been quite a learning experience. Researchers University and Research Institution (incl. Covid-19 has changed everyone's life in many ways; some people are very resistant to change for any reason, and not wanting to change their life because of the virus, almost willfully misunderstand it.. Also, many people do not understand that scientific information, especially about novel phenomena, such as this virus, evolves as more is learned and more data is gathered, as more are infected, and the virus itself evo lves. Scientific information, because of the scientific process, is dynamic and fluid. This pandemic has exposed much general ignorance about science, to say nothing of the near-willfull repudiation of information about Covid-19. As a person with a Muslim name, I get a lot of islamophobic hate just for wri ting a clinically worded fact check on these unproven herbs being peddled for Covid-19. This hate comes because my efforts are perceived as anti-national (because of the political marriage between nationalism and traditional systems of medicine) while our efforts are as patriotic as they get. Contradictory reports are part of science and need not be harmful if reported well. They often, sadly, are not, and the 'argument' is highlighted rather than the mass that scientists usually agree on. Conspiracy theories are a huge problem. They take up way too much time and are impossible to debunk completely. Politicization is also a big problem. Scientists need more support in communication. So much is coming down to this but we are all so pressed for time - it is really hard to keep this balance. Researchers University and Research Institution (incl. Thus, in the context of Covid-19, I was actively involved in communication of Covid-19 - environment interactions. I had to debunk conspiracy ideas of a link between 5G and Covid-19. Further, I found that a pot ential link between air pollution and Covid-19 has received too much attention given the low study quality supporting such a link. From a theoretical point of view such a link might possible. However, from a physiological point of a link between traffic n oise and Covid-19 would be as likely (or unlikely). My focus has been in regards to how dirty air particulates from the exhaust of gas cars, coal, and natural gas carries the virus more and makes many more vulnerable in terms of the immunes system response.
